Symposium "Monitoring and management of current and emerging plant pests and diseases in tomato and bell pepper"

Pepper

paprikaPepper research at the Research Centre Hoogstraten covers all important themes that the cultivation of peppers has to deal with.

Variety trials are a significant part of the pepper research Every year the most promising new pepper varieties undergo an intensive screening to see if they can measure up to the varieties grown in practice. The most attention goes out to the classical bell pepper but it is also possible to evaluate the so-called ‘specialties’, which are different in color, shape or taste.

In addition researchers test new cultivation techniques. The effect of different cultural practices that can improve production and fruit quality are evaluated. New cultivation systems also get the necessary attention.

paprikaWithin the theme diseases and pests there are experiments with biological control agents, insect screens and other measures to reduce the use of chemical crop protection products. Research Centre Hoogstraten also manages an intensive research project concerning the control of internal fruit rot of bell pepper.

Energy saving is in glasshouse horticulture and therefore also in pepper research a very important topic. Various techniques and methods to maximize energy saving, without compromising the rendability of the crop or the quality of the produce, are being closely monitored and implemented in our research activities.
Concerning fertilization and water the sustainable use of water and fertilizers are important issues. Furthermore new fertilizers and cultivation substrates can be tested.

In 2011 a large part of the facilities of the research centre was renewed accommodating the pepper research with 7 ultra modern experimental greenhouse compartments. Together with many years of experience of the researchers and staff the Research Centre Hoogstraten guarantees research of the highest quality.
